Cinema is a dream - the glitz, the glamour, the fame, the money, the love, and most importantly, the validation. People pour their hearts into movies purely for the love of it, and this passion shines through in Rekhachitram, both in its making and its writing.
At its core, it's a simple plot, but what makes it stand out is the central mystery: Who is Rekha? The film presents itself as a police investigative thriller, but the real thrill lies less in the investigation and more in the emotions and dreams it uncovers. What begins as a police procedural gradually transforms into a journey to understand Rekha's character and her aspirations.
There are some brilliant narrative choices here, particularly how the story connects incidents to real-life Malayalam cinema. These moments not only drive the plot forward but also serve as beautiful tributes to the industry. Rekhachitram has many poignant moments that celebrate both Rekha's personal story and Malayalam cinema's rich legacy.
The film also thoughtfully examines the impact actors can have and offers a nostalgic glimpse into what it meant to be part of the movie world in the late 80s. It's a wonderful documentation of cinema's glamorous world - essentially a love letter to filmmaking disguised as a thriller.
While I personally wished for more traditional thriller elements, I still thoroughly enjoyed the movie for its emotional depth and its beautiful ode to cinema. After all, cinema is a dream, and we're all dreamers in this beautiful fantasy.
